We own several "SNIPS" and there's always a pair in arms reach. There's one hanging by the leader material in the garage, there's one attached to the kayak seat, and there are four or five laying in the tool box. It's a tool we use multiple times each day to quickly cut and tie new leaders or replace a lure.
Product Highlights
RETRACTABLE TETHER: Keep your SNIPS always handy and never lost. With the 36” retractable nylon tether your SNIPS will always be at your side and not at the bottom of the water.
INTEGRATED SAFETY: All SNIPS feature and integrated safety mechanism. A small slide of the blade handles forward will unlock the blades and a small slide back will lock the closed while not in use.

We use the Shimano Saragosa SRG6000SW on all of our offshore fishing charters. There are tons of other reels like this on the market. However, this offshore spinning reel has proven to tackle all offshore species and fishing conditions without issue. When selecting a spinning reel for offshore fishing, it is important that you find one that is reliable and durable. This will ensure your reel will hold us against various species of fish and the saltwater environments which tend to corrode certain types of metals.
The Shimano Saragosa SRG6000SW is our "go-to" offshore spinning reel and we will continue using for a long time! If you are searching for a new offshore fishing reel, we highly recommend ordering the Shimano Saragosa SRG6000SW.
Product Highlights:
Equipped with a Propulsion Line Management System that provides longer casting distances while preventing backlashes and wind knots from forming
X-Ship technology provides improved gear durability and eliminates friction between the spool shaft and gear enhancing the casting performance and allowing for longer casts
Shielded roller bearings on both sides reducing the possibility of salt or sand from obstructing the bearing’s rotation while the waterproof drag uses rubber gaskets to protect against intrusion of the elements
Max Drag: 22 lbs. / Gear Ratio: 5.7:1. / Weight: 16.4 oz. / Line Retrieve: 40" / Bearings: 5BB + 1RB – PowerPro Line Cap: 30/290,50/195,65/140 – Mono Line Cap: 12/265,16/170,20/120

We own six Onyx M-24 Manual Inflatable Lifejackets and provide them on all of our Inshore and Offshore Kayak Fishing Charters. There are a ton of lifejackets on the market but we prefer to use the manual inflatables. They are lightweight and breathable, providing all day comfort throughout the year.
The lifejackets hold up well and we haven't ever had an issue. It's a product that we will continue using for a long time! If you are searching for a new lifejacket we highly recommend ordering the Onyx M-24 Manual Inflatable Lifejacket.

We use this reliable fish bag on all of our inshore and offshore charters. There are tons of other bags like this on the market. However, it is important that you find one that will hold up against various species of fish. Specifically, Red Snapper because of their very pointy spines. When we go out on charters, we strap the insulated fish bag to the back of our client's kayak. When I am fishing alone, I strap it to the front of my kayak. It fits perfectly on our Old Town Predator PDL. As you can see below, it can easily held a 4 man limit of Red Snapper.
The reliable fishing products company has been producing products like this for years. They hold a great reputation for creating bags like this for large sports fishing boats. The same material is used to hold tuna, wahoo, and other large offshore species. If you are in the market for a new fish bag, we highly recommend the reliable insulated kayak bag.
In the video “Kayak Fishing Must Haves” we take a few minutes and cover a series of tools that will make your kayak fishing experience a bit easier.
Rod Holder / Milk Crate
You’re going to need a way to store rods on the kayak and a milk crate is one of the best options. You can modify it however you see fit and it’s removable. If you get a new kayak you can just remove the bungees and you’re good to go!
I highly recommend purchasing a pair of pliers with the split ring attachment. It will make changing treble hooks very easy! Its an important must haves for kayak fishing.
Our blog “Kayak Fishing for Beginners” takes a quick look at what you need to get started.
Kayak Fishing is a fantastic way to catch fish while enjoying the outdoors but presents a unique set of challenges.
Safety
Safety should be the number one concern when first starting out and you should take the time to look into what safety equipment is required in your state.
It’s also important to consider where you will be fishing. Florida offers a variety of opportunities, from freshwater to offshore.
We recommend spending sometime in calm and protected waterways before attempting to go offshore.
This will allow you to work out any rigging issues prior to launching in the surf.
***WEAR YOUR LIFEJACKET***
Weather
Checking the weather prior to your trip is very important.
You should consider which direction the wind and tides are moving prior to launching and plan accordingly.
As a general rules of thumb, you should always work your way into the wind/tide so that you can return with the wind/tide at your back.
Selecting A Kayak
If you’re having trouble selecting a kayak we highly recommend checking out our blog/video “Selecting A Kayak.“
We recommend buying an older used kayak prior to diving head first into kayak fishing.
Although it’s an awesome way to fish, it’s not for everyone and anglers often spend thousands of dollars just turn around a sell their kayaks at the end of their first season.
Keep It Simple
New kayak anglers often think they need to bring the entire garage on their fishing trips and things get a little crowded.
There are several ways to catch King Mackerel from a kayak and we are going to briefly highlight two of them.
Live Bait / Frozen Bait
When targeting the majority of offshore fish it’s hard to beat a live Cigar Minnow.
But somedays live bait will be hard to come by and you should always bring a bag of frozen Cigar Minnows to be on the safe side.
Some of our biggest King Mackerel came on frozen Cigar Minnows last year!
Drifting
Drifting is one of the easiest and most effective ways to catch King Mackerel.
When drifting we prefer to use a “pier rig” and 3-4″ Cigar Minnow.
We use 12-18″ of 27 lb. Berkley 7Strand with a swivel and an Eagle Claw Treble Hook (Size 2) attached at opposite ends. We snell the hook and attach the swivel using a Haywire Twist.
This rig is highly customizable and provides a simple starting point for those interested in Kayak Fishing for King Mackerel. We recommend tying several and placing them inside individual ziplock bags for quick access.
King Mackerel are slash feeders and will often bite the bait in half, by presenting a smaller bait you increase the chances of the hook finding the corner of their mouths.
Trolling
There’s a ton of water out there and most anglers like to move, after all, you never know what you’re going to find!
While trolling you might just find a bottom spot loaded with Red Snapper, if you want to catch them, check out Kayak Fishing for Red Snapper.
While trolling we use a “stinger rig” instead of a “pier rig.”
A “stinger rig” uses multiple hooks and allows you to use larger baits while on the move.
The larger baits will stay alive longer and freely swim behind the kayak when you slow down or change directions.
You can purchase pre-made trolling rigs like the Sea Striker at a variety of tackle shops.
However, we prefer to tie our own. This allows us to customize the length of the wire, hook spacing, and skirt color prior to hitting the water.
We will release “King Mackerel Rigs” soon, so keep an eye out!!!
Conclusion
Kayak Fishing for King Mackerel is great way to spend time on the water.
The two methods listed above will make your time on the water more productive.
Knowing the Alabama Kayak Regulations goes along ways towards staying safe while on the water.
Unfortunately, it’s an overlooked topic and can be a bit confusing when traveling along the coast and fishing different water ways.
So, we’re taking the time to let you know everything that is required for all of your kayaking adventures.
Life Jackets
Each child under the age of 8 must wear a Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device (PFD), while the kayak is moving.
Each person riding in the kayak must have an approved PFD available inside the kayak.
IF you choose to use an Inflatable Life Jacket (Type V PFD) it must remain on the entire time you’re in the kayak because it is considered a Class V until inflated. Once inflated they are considered Class II or III depending on the model.
You are not required to wear a Class II or III if it is on the kayak but it is recommended.
A sound-making device isn’t required while you are kayaking but it could save your life.
There are several options but we prefer to use a marine whistle.
Attach the whistle to your PFD and it will always be in arms reach!
Lights
Alabama state law requires a non-motorized watercraft of 16′ or less to display a solid white light after dark while at anchor, when underway, or when fishing.
We recommend installing a light pole on your kayak if you plan to fish at night.
If the pole light isn’t doing the job we shine 500 Lumens in their direction to ensure they see us!!!
Registration is a requirement for all kayaks using a gas or electric motor but isn’t required if you are paddling or pedaling.
General Safety
If you are new to kayaking, we recommend paying close attention to the Alabama Kayak Regulations and spending a few months fishing in protected bodies of water.
The calm waters are the perfect place to work out any kinks and learn how to safely land fish in your kayak.
