Kayak Fishing in February

Kayak Fishing in February

Kayak Fishing in February | Navarre Kayak Fishing

Cold front after cold front has pounded the South Eastern United States over the last two months but it hasn’t slowed the fishing down in Northwest Florida.  Speckled Trout, Hybrid Bass, and Redfish have been abundant throughout the upper bays and river systems.  The winter patterns are in full swing and the Trout fishing is at it’s best.  Continue reading “Kayak Fishing in February” and let us help you catch more fish.

Check out “Waders for Kayak Fishing.”

Speckled Trout

Kayak Fishing in February

The water temperatures are in the 40’s and the Speckled Trout are highly concentrated.  The fish are in predictable areas and have been feeding rather aggressively.  Correctly mimicking the forage species will go a long ways towards ensuring a successful outing.  A MirroLure MR17 is one of the best winter time Trout baits and always get the job done.  If you’re having trouble catching fish, continue moving until you find bait.  Once you find the bait, slow down and thoroughly fish the area.  If you catch a fish, cast right back to where you hooked the first fish.  The fish are often stacked on top of each other and the perfect cast makes a huge difference.  Make sure you are presenting the lure with the current!

Large Trout are more likely to eat baits with a larger profile and we like to target them using large swim baits like the Jackall Rhythm Wave.

Redfish

Kayak Fishing in February

During the winter months, Redfish are abundant in every body of water.  The Santa Rosa Sound is crystal clear the coldest parts of the year.  Sight fishing them can be a bit challenging this time of the year but is an absolute blast!  The clear water makes locating the fish easy, unfortunately it also makes them skittish.  Targeting them in the upper bays is often the easiest route.  The water is warmer and the Redfish are usually mixed into schools of Mullet.  They are still feeding heavily on crustaceans and a well placed soft plastic will get the job done.

Hybrid Bass

Navarre Kayak Fishing Charters What's Biting - February

The coldest months of the year provide the best opportunity to chase Hybrid Bass in Northwest Florida. Hybrid Bass make their way down the Escambia, Blackwater, and Yellow River as the water temperatures decline.  Hybrid Bass have fairly small mouths and actively chase small minnows.  Crankbaits, white bucktail jigs, and silver spoons are commonly used to chase these fish throughout the river systems.

Sheepshead

Sheepshead is a species you don’t hear much about until it’s cold out.  They love structure and can be found around the majority of bridges in the Northwest Florida.  Shrimp, Fiddler Crabs, and Oysters are three of their favorite meals.  Anglers target them using small circle or j-hooks, light fluorocarbon line, and sensitive rods.  Sheepshead have fish just like humans “bite” their food before running.  The bite is often challenging to feel and you will miss a few before you get the hang of it.  The limit on Sheepshead is generous.  Each angler can possess 15 fish at a minimum of 12″.  Additional information is found here – http://myfwc.com/fishing/saltwater/recreational/sheepshead/

Conclusion

Staying warm is the most important aspect of fishing this time of year.  The temperatures will remain low throughout the month, do not be afraid to fish during the middle of the day. Unlike the months prior, the best times to fish in February are often during the warmest parts of the day.  I prefer to fish in the evening whenever possible!

The sun will warm the flats in the evenings and the fish will find the warmest water.  If you find a school of quality fish and they refuse to eat, don’t feel bad.  They are just trying to stay warm and are awesome watch.  Set the fishing pole down and enjoy the view.  There’s more to fishing than catching and this is the best time of the year to take it all in!

Planning a Fishing Trip

Planning a Fishing Trip

Planning a Fishing Trip | Navarre Kayak Fishing

When’s the last time you took time planning a fishing trip?

These five topics are going to change the way you approach your next outing and help you catch more fish.

1. Check The Weather

Checking the weather will always be the first step towards planning a successful fishing trip.

  • Safety is always the number one concern.  If the radar looks bad than stay home and prepare your tackle for the next day.
  • Viewing the wind speed and direction is critical when selecting the areas you plan to fish.
  • Overcast / Sunny conditions make a huge difference in the behavior of fish.

2. Check The Tides

Understanding tidal movement will help you find fish.

  • Find moving water.
  • Position yourself to fish with the tide.
  • Learn how the water depth affects certain species.

3. Check Your Fishing Notes

You don’t take notes?  Check this out – https://navarrekayakfishing.com/planning-a-fishing-trip-take-notes

Reviewing your notes is going to make your decisions easy and it’s super important.

  • Knowing the tidal stage of your last outing is crucial.
  • Identifying the wind direction is crucial.
  • Knowing what area you found success is crucial.
  • Knowing what type of bait was in the area is crucial.

Got it?  Take notes!

4. Target a Specific Species

What are you going fishing for?  Knowing the characteristics of each species is very important.

  • All species behave differently.
  • Various species feed on different types of bait.
  • Sudden weather changes will change the pattern of each species.

If you’re just casting around hoping for a bite, your wasting a ton of time!

Understanding the characteristics of each individual species makes a huge difference and will help you catch more fish.

5. Pick A Location

Use the information you have gathered from the first four steps to pick a fishing spot.

  • Use Google Maps AND Google Earth.
  • Fish the areas that no one else pays attention too.

Conclusion

Planning a fishing trip is more important than going to the store and buying a new lure.

If you want to catch more fish, pay attention to the details, and put in time on the water.

Checking the weather, reviewing notes, and targeting a specific species will increase your productivity.

Are you interested in going Kayak Fishing?

Here’s a little insight!

Kayak Fishing Trips

During the summer the kayaks are in the water before the sun crests the horizon and there’s not a soul in sight.

Dark, calm, silent, and peaceful start to paint a picture that is hard to imagine and impossible to forget.

As the sun peaks over the horizon, baitfish begin skipping across the surface.

Calm mornings provide the perfect environment for throwing topwater lures.

Redfish and Speckled Trout love to eat topwater lures as the sun rises.

As the lure walks across the waters surface, bait scatters, the lure disappears, and the drag begins to sing.

As the drag ceases, the head shakes begin.

A solid fish will make several runs before tiring and sliding into the net.

Tiring the fish out is key and almost guarantees that you will successfully land the fish.

Inshore Kayak Fishing Trips

We run Inshore Kayak Fishing Charters year round in Northwest Florida due to the excellent weather.

Throughout the year we target a variety of species.

In the Spring (March – May) we focus our efforts on chasing Bull Redfish in shallow water.

Sight fishing these 30″-35″ fish is an incredible experience and is guaranteed to excite.

During the Summer (June – September) we start off chasing Speckled Trout using topwater lures.

As the sun rises we transition into sight fishing for slot Redfish using soft plastic lures.

During the Fall (October – November) focus on completing an Inshore Slam and the results are awesome.

Speckled Trout, Redfish, and Flounder are the three species we focus on during the fall.

In the Winter (December – February) we switch gears completely due to the cooler temperatures.

As a result we are provided with opportunities to chase giant Speckled Trout and Striped Bass.

It’s cold; but if you’re willing to fish, we know where to find them and love spending time on the water.

Offshore Kayak Fishing Trips

We run Offshore Kayak Fishing Charters from May to October.

Anglers have the opportunity to target a variety of species, from Red Snapper to Sailfish.

Offshore trips are easily affected by the weather and safety is our first concern.

Red Snapper season is short, as a result bookings fill quickly.

Reach out in advance, if you’re interested in scheduling a Red Snapper trip.

Preparation and Recommended Gear

Since we experience all four seasons in Northwest, FL and dressing appropriately makes a huge difference.

Kayak Fishing in January

Kayak Fishing in January

Kayak Fishing in January | Navarre Kayak Fishing

The water temperatures have dropped and some would say the fishing has slowed down.  However, we are hear to tell you that January is one of our favorite months to be on the water.  The cold weather keeps recreational boaters at their houses and the hunters are in the woods.  This opens up the water ways and allows angler’s a quiet approach into some of the best fishing Northwest Florida has to offer.  Winter has set in and the fish are settling into a pattern.  What do you want to chase? Continue reading “Kayak Fishing in January” and let us help you catch more fish.

Check out “Waders for Kayak Fishing.”

Striped Bass

Striped Bass are no longer able to reproduce naturally in our waterways but the Blackwater Fisheries Research and Development Center has been raising and releasing fingerling’s since 1987.  They spend their summers up river in deep holes, but once the water temperatures drop they move down the rivers and feed aggressively.  Striper are lowlight feeders and the bigger fish feed primarily at night, on large Mullet.

The majority of anglers target these fish in the Escambia River, the Blackwater River, and the Yellow River.  They can be caught in a variety of ways but we prefer to target them using topwater lures, right before sunrise.  Catching large Striped Bass doesn’t come easy and often comes down to being in the right place at the right time.

Angler’s often relate large Striped Bass to terrible weather conditions and January usually does a great job at providing cold, wet mornings.  If you want to catch a stud, there’s a good chance you’re going to be pretty cold.

Are you up to it?

Kayak Fishing in January

Speckled Trout

The cooler weather will concentrate large numbers of Speckled Trout in highly predictable areas and these fish will feed on slow moving baits.  It’s important that you work your lure slow and ensure it looks just like a dying baitfish.  A MirroLure MR17 is one of the best winter time Trout baits and always get the job done.  When fishing these it’s important to count the lure down and pause it for large durations.  If you think you’re going slow, slow down some more, and wait for the bite.

Trophy Trout are more likely to eat baits with a larger profile and we liked to target them using large swim baits like the Jackall Rhythm Wave.  Targeting large Trout is a blast!

Redfish

Redfish are fun to chase while kayak fishing in January and can be caught in a variety of ways throughout the year and during the coldest months of the season they are still willing to chase down prey.  They are easily caught throwing soft plastics like a Matrix Shad or Zoom Fluke in areas that warm up quickly and hold bait.  Redfish often stage around drainage areas and feed on small crustaceans.

Staying warm is the most important aspect of fishing this time of year. As the temperatures continue to drop throughout the month, do not be afraid to fish during the middle of the day. Unlike the months prior, the best times to fish in January are often during the warmest parts of the day.

Kayak Fishing in Destin

Are you interested in Kayak Fishing in Destin on your family vacation?

Awesome!  Let’s talk about Kayak Fishing in Destin and help you pick the area you plan to fish.

Destin, Florida is a well known tourist destination and over 2.5 million people visited the area in the last year.

The city is full of things to do with the family, to include, boating, jet skiing, and parasailing.

Those activities are all incredibly fun and will keep everyone in the family happy.

However, the number of inexperienced boaters on the water is incredible and accidents often occur.

Novice jet skiers and boaters run right up on top of kayakers and disturb the fishing areas on a regular basis.

Finding calm, undisturbed waters can be challenging in the city limits.

Are there alternative areas to fish?

However, there are several places near Destin that allow you to fish without the traffic.

Kayak fishing is an adventure and getting away from the crowds make the trips much more enjoyable.

To the East, Hogtown Bayou provides protected water and quality fishing throughout the year.

Last year we met several clients at the bayou and had fantastic days on the water.

Kayak Fishing in Destin

North of Destin, you will find Rocky Bayou and the entire northern shore of the Choctawhatchee Bay.

The northern shore is full of Redfish and provides anglers the opportunity to sight cast fish throughout the day.

West of Destin, Navarre offers a completely different scenery.

Boat traffic lightens and things begin to slow down.

The Santa Rosa Sound and East Bay provide excellent fishing and tons of adventure.

Winter Fishing Trips

Winter Fishing Trips

Winter Fishing Trips | Navarre Kayak Fishing

Winter Fishing Trips?

You live in Florida, you don’t have a winter season!?

Yes, it happens and its usually fairly mild.

From December to February we run the majority of our charters in the afternoons.

This allows the temperatures to rise and makes things a little more comfortable.

However, we do receive a few wintery storms and are prepared to fish in any condition.

The fish don’t mind the cooler weather and normally feed heavily on dying baitfish.

Staying Warm

Staying dry is the key to staying warm.  If you fail to wear the proper attire your going to be cold!

Overdressing will lead to sweating and once you are wet coldness sets in quickly.

Pedaling helps get the blood flowing but is useless without the proper clothing.

We spend a ton of time on the water each year and have found out what works best through trial and error.

Here’s a short list of items we use to stay dry and warm.

Suggested Items for Winter Trips:
