Kayak Fishing in April

Kayak Fishing in April

Kayak Fishing in April | Navarre Kayak Fishing

It’s officially Spring.  The Spring Breakers have arrived and Kayak Fishing in April is here to help you catch more fish!

The last week of March filled with winds up to 20 MPH but the fish didn’t seem to mind.

The flats are full of life and here’s how we plan to catch them.

Redfish

April is a fantastic month for chasing shallow water Redfish.

As usual we will spend the mornings throwing topwater lures.  This will allow us to cover water quickly and find active fish.

As the sunrises we will switch it up to soft plastics and start sighting casting fish as they prowl the flats in search of an easy meal.

Sight fishing is the most exciting way to catch a Redfish and thats what we spend the majority of the year doing.

We prefer to target these fish using 1/4 ounce jig heads and an Ultraviolet Matrix Shad.

Speckled Trout

Throughout the Spring, Speckled Trout key in on small baits and shy away from large topwater lures the majority of the time.

I prefer to throw 3″ soft plastic lures or small suspending jerk baits.

My all-time favorite is the Rapala X-Rap 08 in Olive Green.  (Purchase it here – https://amzn.to/2GlxLWl

Flounder

April is a great month for chasing Flounder.  They are migrating back inshore and are ready to eat!

While targeting Flounder, your lure should maintain constant contact with the sea floor.

We prefer to throw a Matrix Shad in Ultra-Violet and pair it was a 5/16-3/8 ounce jig head.

Conclusion

Historically, April is as wind as it gets in Northwest Florida.

However, the fish have to eat…

Get on the water and catch some fish!

Thanks for reading Kayak Fishing in April.

Kayak Fishing in March

Kayak Fishing in March

Kayak Fishing in March | Navarre Kayak Fishing

Spring has arrived early and the weather has been amazing.

The air temperatures have been perfect and the water temperatures are rising daily.

The flats are beginning to come alive and the fishing has been nothing short of spectacular.

Continue reading Kayak Fishing in March and let us help you catch more fish.

Redfish

The month of March means Redfish and the warm weather kicked off the show a week early.

The fish are cruising the shallows and we will spend the mornings throwing topwater lures.

As the sunrises we will switch it up to soft plastics and start sighting casting fish as the prowl the flats in search of an easy meal.

Sight fishing is the most exciting way to catch a Redfish and thats what we spend the majority of the year doing.

Speckled Trout

As the water temperature continues to rise the Speckled Trout will invade the flats.

These fish love to eat topwater lures as the sun comes up!

Spring means small bait and this fish are often keyed in on baits with a smaller profile.

Keep this in mind when you go a while without a bite.

Sheepshead

Sheepshead love structure and are found around the majority of bridges in the Northwest Florida.

Shrimp, Fiddler Crabs, and Oysters are three of their favorite meals.

Anglers target them using small circle or j-hooks, light fluorocarbon line, and sensitive rods.

Sheepshead have teeth like humans and “bite” their food before running.

The bite is often challenging to feel and you will miss a few before you get the hang of it.

The limit on Sheepshead is generous.

Conclusion

Although Spring doesn’t official start until the end of March…

Spring kicked off in mid February and the fish are moving all over the place.

Get on the water and catch some fish!

Thanks for reading Kayak Fishing in March.

What’s Biting – December

Navarre Kayak Fishing Charters . What's Biting - December

What’s Biting – December | Navarre Kayak Fishing

Inshore fishing is always action packed during the month of December. Kayak fisherman along the Emerald Coast have the opportunity to target a wide variety of species. As the water temperatures drop the Speckled Trout will transition to canals, channels, and bayous. Redfish will stage on the outside of bayous and Sheepshead will invade the bridges. Striper will make their way down the rivers to feed on Mullet in the worst weather of the year. Ya, December is an exciting month and it’s full of opportunity.  Continue reading “What’s Biting – December” and let us help you catch more fish.

Speckled Trout

The Speckled Trout bite will be excellent throughout the month of December. The cooler weather will concentrate the fish in predictable areas. Once you find a productive area, it will stay productive until the weather changes drastically. (Temperature, rain, or wind) This is a great time of year to throw suspending lures, such as a Egret Baits Zombie R.I.P. Stik or a MirrOdine 17MR. Fishing slow is the key to success, the fish are keyed in on dying baitfish and the correct presentation will make all of the difference.

Navarre Kayak Fishing Charters December

Slot Redfish

Slot Redfish feed primarily on crustaceans and near bayous, rivers, and canals. The north winds provide calm water and perfect conditions for targeting these beautiful fish in the Santa Rosa Sound. The kayak allows for a quiet approach and makes sight fishing a blast. We like to throw a Matrix Shad in Ultra-Violet paired with a ¼ ounce jig head. This combination does a great job at mimicking a small Shrimp and isn’t often overlooked.

Navarre Kayak Fishing Charters December

Sheepshead

Sheepshead is a nice change of pace come December and can be found on a variety of inshore structure, such as bridges, jetties, and deeper docks. The fish will remain in these areas until they spawn. Sheepshead are easily targeted using Fiddler Crabs, Shrimp, and Oysters. They can be finicky and the bait must appear as naturally as possible, small hooks, fluorocarbon, and braided line increases your chances of feeling the bite.

What's Biting - December

Striped Bass

The water temperature is continuing to drop and the Striper’s are making their way down the rivers. These fish are extremely nomadic and spend a ton of time chasing Mullet during the winter months. Striper are low light feeders and a blast to catch on topwater lures. It will take sometime to find the big ones but it’s worth the chase.

Navarre Kayak Fishing Charters What's Biting - December

Next month we will elaborate on Striper fishing in “What’s Biting – January”

Staying warm is the most important aspect of fishing this time of year. As the temperatures continue to drop throughout the month, do not be afraid to fish during the middle of the day. Unlike the months prior, the best times to fish in December are often during the warmest parts of the day.
